Parking garage Geyerschütt

Hermi, Europe’s leading manufacturer of lightning protection systems, contributed to the renovation of the Geyerschütt parking garage roof in the centre of Klagenfurt with its safe and technically advanced lightning protection solutions.
A complete lightning protection system was installed on the roof of the garage, which has more than 350 parking spaces, in compliance with Austrian legislation mandating lightning protection for buildings of this type. The earthing of the system was achieved using Hermi earth rods. As extreme weather becomes an increasing concern in urban areas, the solution was carefully designed – supported by the Hermi Shield planning tool.

One of the project’s key requirements was to rehabilitate and install lightning protection on the approximately 3,000-square-metre roof without further interfering with the existing sheet metal roofing and solar power plant. Hermi provided an elegant solution with its SON16 KDT (11632) stainless steel roof fasteners, which were attached directly to pre-prepared roofing bolts. These fasteners also feature a double-click system for quick, secure installation of the round lightning conductor, allowing for a fast, efficient, and mechanically stable setup.
More than 400 SON16 KDT fasteners were installed.
A critical component of any lightning protection system is proper earthing. Hermi supplied POS K (90725) earth rods, which were driven into the ground around the building and connected to the vertical down conductors. The system enables the safe discharge of electrical current during lightning strikes, protecting both the building and its occupants.
Over 800 metres of round aluminium conductor AH1 (8 mm diameter) were laid for the air-termination and down-conductor system. An additional 400 SON16 fasteners with integrated sealing elements (11631) were installed along the building façade, securely holding the round conductor in place.

Installers also mounted 2.5-metre-long aluminium air-termination rods, type LOP2.5 (300512), on the roof. These were secured to the sheet metal roofing using LOP-P16 A attachment kits (301507).
